June 16, 2012 — Shelbey and Stacey Manthorpe, the “Twin Towers” who last year led Synergy’s 18 Orange to the 2011 Junior Girls’ Open Championship match, are featured prominently this week on the Seton Hall website for their record-setting contributions to the school’s Division 1 volleyball program.
In the first in a series of “postcards” focused on Pirate athletes, Seton Hall shined the spotlight on the freshman accomplishments of the Manthorpe twins. Shelbey, a setter, was named Seton Hall Freshman Female Student-Athlete of the Year after earning the first triple-double in the program’s history and finishing the year with the second most-triple doubles in the nation with four. (A triple-double is recorded when a player, during one match, reaches double-digits in three out of five statistical cateogories – aces, blocks, kills, digs and assists.)
Shelbey also recorded a team-high 16 double-doubles, led the team in assists (961) and tied for the team lead with a .264 attacking percentage.
Stacey also made her mark as an opposite side/outside hitter, finishing second on the squad in kills (281) and points (317) while ranking third on the team with 50 assists and five double-doubles of her own.
The outstanding performances by both players helped Seton Hall set a new school record with eight Big East victories and win its third straight Big East Championship berth. The Pirate’s overall record of 17-12 was the team’s best performance since 2003.
“While there is no questioning their competitiveness on the volleyball court, the two have built a relationship based on cooperation and support that not only quells any notion of a sibling rivalry, but makes them an extremely formidable duo,” wrote Seton Hall.
Next year, the twins will be joined by current Synergy 18 Orange hitter Molly Grammer, who later this month will compete in the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
